Women Make Up About 43% of U.S. Pickleball Players

SFIA’s 2026 release puts women at 42.9% of players based on 2025 participation, up from 38.6% in 2020—and explains why it rounds to 43%.

Women accounted for 42.9% of U.S. pickleball players in 2025, according to figures released by the Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) on June 4, 2026. SFIA reported 24.3 million players overall and said women’s share had risen from 38.6% in 2020. The key date distinction is that this is 2025 participation reported in 2026, not a measurement covering calendar year 2026 (SFIA’s 2026 Pickleball Single Sport Report announcement).

The answer: women represented 42.9% of U.S. players

The most precise current answer is 42.9%. Rounded to the nearest whole percentage point, women represented about 43% of U.S. pickleball participants.

SFIA’s standing research page presents the gender distribution as 57% male and 43% female (SFIA’s U.S. pickleball participation statistics). The 42.9% and 43% figures are therefore two presentations of the same finding rather than competing estimates:

  • 42.9% is the more precise share reported for 2025 participation.
  • 43% is the corresponding whole-number figure.

The geographic scope matters. This statistic describes pickleball participation in the United States. It should not be presented as the percentage of players worldwide, because countries may measure participation through different surveys, registrations or federation records. Those populations are not necessarily comparable.

The word “players” also needs to be read in the context of the reported participation population. The publicly available percentage describes U.S. pickleball participants generally. It is not a women-only membership count, tournament count or count of people registered with a governing body.

For a brief answer, “about 43% of U.S. pickleball players are women” is accurate and readable. The more precise 42.9% is preferable when documenting the source, comparing years or calculating an estimated number of players.

Why this is 2025 data in a 2026 report

The year attached to a report is not always the year its participation figures measure. SFIA released the relevant report announcement in June 2026, but the figures describe participation during 2025.

The clearest formulation is:

Calling 42.9% the “2026 percentage” can work as shorthand for the latest percentage published in 2026. It should not be interpreted to mean that SFIA measured participation throughout calendar year 2026. A complete figure for participation during 2026 would require a later reporting cycle.

That trade-press account is useful as secondary confirmation of the total player count and annual growth rate. It should not be treated as the primary evidence for women’s share, because it does not independently state or analyze the 42.9% figure.

Keeping the report year and participation year separate prevents a common dating error. “Published in 2026” describes when the result became available; “2025 participation” describes what period the result represents.

Women’s share rose 4.3 percentage points since 2020

The change is calculated by subtracting the earlier share from the later one:

42.9% − 38.6% = 4.3 percentage points

That is an increase of 4.3 percentage points, not simply “4.3%.” Percentage points describe the direct difference between two percentages. A relative percentage increase would answer a different question and require a different calculation.

Two related but distinct trends occurred from 2020 through 2025:

  1. Women came to represent a larger share of U.S. pickleball participants.
  2. The overall U.S. player population expanded from 4.2 million in 2020 to 24.3 million in 2025.

The first trend is about the composition of the player base. The second is about its total size. An increasing share within a rapidly expanding population means that the estimated number of women grew by more than the share change alone might suggest.

Neither trend establishes why women’s share increased. The figures show a demographic change, but the public evidence supplied here does not isolate causes. Explanations involving facilities, social play, media exposure or changes in who takes up the sport would require separate evidence.

The comparison also does not establish whether the 4.3-point increase is statistically significant. Evaluating significance would require information about sampling and uncertainty that is not available in the public report announcement.

What 42.9% implies in player numbers

SFIA did not directly report a women-only player count in the supplied public figures. However, its reported total and gender share can be combined to produce an approximate estimate:

The leading tilde in ~10.4 million signals that the figure is approximate. It communicates the likely scale without implying that SFIA directly identified or counted precisely 10,424,700 women.

The calculation is also specific to the overall participant population represented by the two inputs. It should not be repurposed as an estimate of women who play frequently, compete in tournaments, hold memberships or meet another narrower definition.

How to interpret competing figures and missing detail

Not every published demographic summary gives the same gender split. One commercial statistics page reports a 60% male and 40% female distribution. Although the page is labeled as a 2026 report and says its data run through 2025, it does not clearly identify the particular dataset, survey year, sample or methodology supporting that split.

The 40% figure should not receive equal weight with the SFIA-attributed 42.9% result. The latter is tied to a named research organization, a defined participation year and a specific report cycle. It is also consistent with SFIA’s rounded presentation of women as 43% of participants.

The difference does not necessarily mean that one page made an arithmetic error. Participation estimates can differ when sources use different timeframes, eligibility rules, survey instruments or definitions of a player. The problem is that the commercial summary does not provide enough detail to determine whether its 40% figure measures a genuinely comparable population.

There are limits to the SFIA figure as well. The public report announcement does not provide the underlying sample size, field dates, weighting details, uncertainty estimates or a complete participant definition. Without that information, the apparent 2.9-point difference between 40% and 42.9% should not be treated as proof of a precisely measured gap between equivalent studies.

The public gender percentage also applies to U.S. players generally. It does not provide a separate female share among core players. SFIA defines core players in the announcement as those who played at least eight times during the year, but the available material does not state what percentage of that group were women.

A statement that participation among new players is trending toward an even gender split should also be treated cautiously. Without a quantified percentage, timeframe and supporting method, it does not establish that women represent 50% of all U.S. pickleball participants.

The defensible conclusion is that the latest figure published in 2026 puts women at 42.9%—about 43%—of U.S. pickleball players, based on 2025 participation. That was 4.3 percentage points above the 2020 share and implies ~10.4 million women when applied to the reported total, with the final number understood as a calculation rather than a directly reported count.
