Pro Pickleball Players: Who Leads—and What the Counts Measure

Gail Hutchins

See leading pro pickleball players in October 2026, how PPA rankings work, and why ranked-player totals are not a census of paid professionals.

Ben Johns and Anna Leigh Waters lead the men’s and women’s World Pickleball Rankings displayed by the PPA Tour as of October 11, 2026. Those are composite rankings across singles, doubles and mixed doubles—not separate singles rankings or a census of everyone playing professionally. Source: PPA Tour standings.

For readers tracking the professional side of pickleball’s growth, three different measures matter: a player’s ranking, their contract status and their participation in pro events. They do not count the same population.

Leading pro pickleball players in October 2026

The PPA Tour’s displayed top five in each category provide a sourced starting list:

Rank within category Men Women
1 Ben Johns Anna Leigh Waters
2 Gabriel Tardio Anna Bright
3 Christian Alshon Jorja Johnson
4 Hayden Patriquin Tyra Hurricane Black
5 Federico Staksrud Rachel Rohrabacher

Source and scope: PPA World Pickleball Rankings, checked October 11, 2026. These standings include international players and use the preceding 52 weeks of eligible PPA results. The linked Pickleball.com standings displayed the week of October 5, 2026, with the same women’s top five.

This is not a list of the best players on every professional circuit. The Association of Pickleball Players (APP) has its own professional competition. At the October 2026 APP Columbus Open, for example, Jack Munro won men’s doubles with Richard Livornese Jr. and mixed doubles with Jill Braverman. Domenika Turkovic won women’s singles, Tristan Dussault won men’s singles, and Shelby Bates and Christine Maddox won women’s doubles. Those are event champions, not an overall ranking. What makes someone a pro?

For the PPA’s formal Touring Pro status, the defining requirement is an official United Pickleball Association player contract. Its guide also distinguishes non-contracted players, who can compete in smaller events and qualify for larger ones when places are available. Consequently, appearing in a ranking or a qualifying draw does not by itself establish Touring Pro status. Source: PPA’s guide to professional competition.

Other competitions have different entry rules. The APP’s new Moneyball Series describes itself as a pathway for professional and aspiring professional players, but allows anyone to enter, with no minimum DUPR rating. Beginning October 30, 2026, the series is scheduled to award prize money and APP ranking points, with a route toward a later APP contract. An entry in that series therefore should not automatically be counted as an established professional career. Source: APP Moneyball rules.

How many pro pickleball players are there?

The available figures here do not establish a worldwide total of paid professionals. Two useful numbers illustrate why:

  • 2,200 ranked players: The PPA standings displayed 1,392 men and 808 women on October 11, 2026. This measures the size of that ranking list, including international players—not the number holding contracts or earning a living from pickleball. Source: PPA standings.
  • ~70 APP signings: In its August 3, 2026 announcement, the APP reported “nearly 70” female and male pros signed since the start of 2026. That is a dated operator-reported signing figure, not a count of all APP entrants or all professionals worldwide. Source: APP announcement.

Do not simply add tour lists and Major League Pickleball rosters. They can overlap: a June 2026 report, for example, identified Sofia Sewing and Casey Diamond as newly signed with both the PPA Tour and MLP. A defensible combined count would need unique-player records, a defined period and a consistent eligibility rule. Source: Pickleball.com’s MLP player report.

For the much larger recreational population, use pickleball participation estimates rather than professional rankings.

How to read a player’s ranking

The PPA’s 2026–27 composite formula weights men’s or women’s doubles at 50%, mixed doubles at 35% and singles at 15%. It uses the best 14 tournament results in each discipline, with the Pickleball World Championships and the three other PPA Majors mandatory regardless of result. Its separate Current Seed measure is discipline-specific, so a singles specialist can have a strong singles seed without leading the composite standings. Source: PPA ranking methodology.

A rating answers another question. As USA Pickleball explains, a rating estimates ability, while a ranking places a player relative to others based on results. When comparing pro players, name the provider, discipline and date before interpreting the number.
