The Picklr: Local Closures, Not a Confirmed Chain-Wide Shutdown

Gail Hutchins

Local closures and corporate staff cuts are documented, but a chain-wide Picklr shutdown is not confirmed. Here’s what the reports and court counts show.

The available evidence does not establish a chain-wide shutdown as of October 4, 2026. Local closures and corporate staff cuts are documented, however. In a September 18 message to franchisees provided to Pickleball Innovators by The Picklr’s public relations team, CEO Jorge Barragan confirmed staff reductions and said leadership was evaluating options, with no final decisions made about the company’s path forward. Report on the company’s message

The useful distinction is between The Picklr’s corporate business, an individual franchise location, and the courts inside that location. Trouble or a change at one level does not establish the same outcome at the others.

Which locations have closed or changed brands?

These three reported cases have different outcomes. They are a case list, not a complete inventory of changes across the franchise system.

Location Reported change What the evidence supports
Round Rock, Texas Closed in early September 2026 Community Impact reported that owners chose not to renew the lease and consolidated operations into Austin West and Oak Hill, citing a September 4 club Facebook post. Local report
Birmingham/Vestavia Hills, Alabama Closure announced for September 27, 2026 Bham Now reported the closing date. Club coordinator Ross English told the publication that the building’s ownership group had sold the property. That reported property change does not establish a chain-wide financial cause. Local report
Goleta, California Left The Picklr and became The Grove Pickleball Owner Ted Guggenheim told the Santa Barbara News-Press he was losing money under the franchise model. The change was a rebrand, not a reported disappearance of the facility. Local report

Operator pages captured on October 4 also indicate continued activity elsewhere: The Picklr’s Austin West page advertises memberships and daily hours, while its Alabama directory lists only Huntsville. Those listings are useful operating signals—not proof of the franchisor’s financial health.

What is known about the corporate situation?

The company’s September 18 message confirmed corporate staff reductions but did not disclose the number of employees affected, the positions involved or the reason for the cuts. Its statement about evaluating options did not identify those options or give a decision timeline. Pickleball Innovators

Separately, the International Association of Pickleball and Padel Facilities (IAPPF) reported that The Picklr’s 2025 Franchise Disclosure Document warned about the franchisor’s financial ability to provide services and support to franchisees. IAPPF said it had not independently verified a bankruptcy petition or case number and cautioned that claims of the entire network shutting down remained unverified. IAPPF’s findings and limitations

That is evidence of risk, not confirmation of bankruptcy. As IAPPF notes, a franchisor bankruptcy would not automatically mean every independently owned club closes.

Why these cases do not produce a closure rate

According to IAPPF’s summary of the 2026 franchise disclosure data, The Picklr reported 56 franchised outlets at year-end 2025, with 12 full-year operators included in its mature-unit financial-performance sample. The first number describes the reported franchise inventory at a historical date; the second describes the coverage of a performance sample. Neither is a current operating-club count. IAPPF’s FDD summary

Dividing the cases above by 56 would therefore be misleading: the cases are not a complete closure tally, the dates differ, and a rebrand is not a facility closure.

For court tracking, Goleta is especially important. The Grove’s own website advertises seven indoor courts at its Goleta address. A brand exit there should not be recorded as seven courts lost. The Grove’s operator page

For a member, the practical question is narrower: is your particular club continuing, relocating, rebranding or closing? Check its latest notice and contact the local operator before renewing or prepaying. Ask specifically about the last playing date, membership transfers and unused prepaid balances; another Picklr location’s outcome does not answer those questions for yours.
